Call a spade a spade

The proverb is very simple but speaks a lot. If you say that someone calls a spade a spade, it means that the person is frank and outspoken. He will express himself and speak frankly about anything and anyone.

Today the world is full of persons having honey coated tongues. Whenever asked for a frank opinion, we will think twice as; if I speak frankly that person may not digest the fact and he may not like it. So in pretence we hide the truth and spell out lies. In practical life we should have the guts to spell out the truth. The listener may not like it, but the truth remains the truth. Today he may not be able to digest the truth but later on he will realize that the truth helped him from falling in chaos. This is especially true when a close accomplice asks an opinion as he is unable to take a decision. Presenting a rosy picture will keep him happy and contented in the short run. However the truth will help him in the long run.

A spade here could mean a shovel which is used for digging or spade is found in playing cards. However, there is a reference whereby the spade in playing card was a term for Black people in United States. Hence sometimes in this proverb there is a racist origin which means calling a spade a spade refers to the black. However, we prefer to keep such opinions aside and do not consider them relevant.

In the real context one has to understand the true meaning of the proverb and practice it in its true sense. Come what may learn to speak the truth, be frank and put forth your opinion, however avoid being too blunt. Try to be genuine and convey your true opinions. Such people are always respected and held in high honor. Sugar coated persons are not trusted much. Hence learn to call a spade a spade.

Curiosity killed the cat but the cat has nine lives

To understand the literal meaning of the proverb it is necessary that we break the proverb into two; 'A cat has nine lives' means every human being gets plenty of chances in his life. The second part 'Curiosity killed the cat ' means we should not interfere into the affairs of other people as we may get into trouble.

From the Egyptian civilization cats have been considered as a holy animal and has also been worshipped by many civilizations. Considering most animals wild or domesticated, cat is very different from most animals. The cat is very agile and it can jump from very high places and can adjust its body posture in such a way that when it jumps it does not hurt himself. It was a belief in ancient times that the cat has many lives as it loses one of its life when it jumps from such heights. Cats climb high trees and roofs, they run in front of vehicles and jump from high places , they do not even hesitate doing such stunts and after all these acrobatics they walk calmly in a cool pace.

They have nine lives means they cheated death eight times before. Only this feline is having this distinctive feature. The number nine has been referred to, does not literally mean nine. The number nine has been deliberately used in the proverb as it is a mystic number which invokes religion and tradition.

Now we relate this to human beings, God ensures that everyone is given opportunities in his life. Sometimes we escape an accident , we may escape near death situations, we may escape being caught or punished . However even after such opportunities we tend to be curious and put our noses into things we are not concerned which may get us into trouble. Human beings by very nature are curious and we unnecessarily interfere in things which is not our concern. Unlike cats we do not have nine lives. Hence it is better not to poke our nose and interfere in things in which we are not concerned. As being curious we may be killed, here killed literally does not mean loss of life but may mean disaster and sufferings.

Charity begins at home

This is a very popular saying and is very commonly used in day to day communication. Charity is a kind act. It is our moral duty to help our fellow beings when they are in need. A person lives in a society; he can't enjoy the comforts when his fellow beings are suffering around him. It is right that one should help others but help should be given to those who actually need and deserve it. This proverb tells us that first of all one should help the nearest needy person then one should go further.

Nowadays we see that hundreds of social reformers are trying to remove the ills of society, however there are ills and malpractices right in their homes or under their nose. Many women reformers preach about various ill treatments given to daughter in law's however, we find most of such atrocities in their own houses. They preach and that there should be good relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-raw. But there is always darkness under the lamp. The woman preaches in the society, but one can find the opposite picture at their own homes. When they themselves quarrel with each other how can they preach others? In the same way some parents preach that children these days are following bad habits, however their own children may go astray. They take drugs, smoke and practice other bad things. All the great leaders and reformers preach against dowry system and they themselves give dowry from the back door. That's why it is said that charity must begin from their own houses. First of all preachers should bring reforms in their own homes and then they should try to reform others. Being charitable is not bad but be charitable at the home first.

It is easy to preach about doing good things and good deeds. Most people do such things to show off and impress others, but when it comes to doing good deeds to persons who are very close i.e. our family members, relatives, colleagues, employees, servants and others closely connected, they treat them badly.

A person's first obligation is to help his own family and closely associated persons before he can begin talking of helping others. Hence the proverb is very relevant and a guiding lesson to humanity.

Charity is universal duty

Charity towards human beings who are suffering is a moral duty of each one of us. To give charity to others one has to be kind-hearted. Polite and soft hearted people only can help the suffering people. Others can't do. Nowadays everywhere we see pitiable conditions of human beings. All people live in the society together. When someone is suffering how can others make merry and enjoy. So it should be the duty of those who can afford to help those who are in need.

It is only through charity and kindness that bonds of love and affection can be strengthened. These virtues should be cultivated in the hearts of people. It is said that there are virtues which are always inborn, they can't be taught outwardly. Those who have fear of God serve the distressed people the best. If man acquires such virtues only then he is known as a social animal otherwise he is lesser than an animal.

There are many students who are brilliant but can't pay their fees. They must be helped by the well to do teachers and sincere people outside the institution, so that they continue their studies.

In the present world we see a lot of air strikes and war going on. We as fellow human beings should be united and come forward to help in whatever way possible to the civilians and common brethren who are suffering daily in the war affected areas.

The same situation is viewed when some natural calamity befalls any country, other countries immediately send help and medical aid in whatever way possible to help the persons affected and suffering. It is this feeling of kindness that kindles in the hearts of the people. So they get ready to send their aids to them. This is because charity is a universal duty of all. To be charitable is the best virtue of man's character. This proverb thus advises us that Charity is a universal duty and nobody should shirk away from this duty. Only then we can make the world a nice place to live in.

Children and fools tell the truth

It is a normal human tendency to teach young children that they should always speak the truth otherwise God will punish them . Children therefore always speak the truth. It is their innocence that is looked upon in this proverb , here again reference is made of fools, they have no thinking process, they are as innocent as children.

Certain circumstances are encountered in life whereby speaking the truth may not be advisable and the same may cause harm. It is here that the proverb holds true that it is sometimes advantageous to lie. Children and fools do not have a well developed thinking process and hence they do not know that it is sometimes advantageous to lie.

This proverb may sound as simple and easy as it states. However this is not always true. Children lie quite often, this they will aptly prove that they have learnt it from their parents, media and other children. The reason why they lie can be numerous; for pleasure, to get out of trouble and punishment, or just as a way of experimenting. As stated earlier their thinking process is not fully developed and they cannot think as aptly as an adult.

We are aware that lying is wrong still at times we may have to lie which may not be wrong. A lie to the boss for leave, a lie about spending habits to our spouse to keep up a healthy relation and certain other lies. Any lie by which we are not hurting someone or not causing harm to someone but the lie helps us at a personal level is acceptable. One cannot always speak the truth. Here the justification for the lie should be adequate. Research has found that human beings tend to lie.

Hence the proverb aptly holds true that children and fools always tell the truth.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness

Cleanliness is considered to be the most important part of man's life. Cleanliness is a must for human beings. Here cleanliness does not mean just external cleanliness but also cleanliness for the inner soul. God is thought to be the most sacred and the purest being. So a person who is pure and clean in body and heart is considered to be next to God. Godliness is to be pious and religious. Purity must be an essential part of man's life. Only that man is known the man of character who keeps his image clean. Clean image is based on the good character of man. Character of a person depends upon the purity of his thoughts, words and deeds.

A godly person is an embodiment of all virtues. A person who is outwardly very clean and inwardly poisonous can be the most dangerous person for the society. If only by taking bath one thinks that he is clean and next to God then all the creatures which always remain in the water should thought to be next to godliness. Outwardly cleanliness must be an index of inward purity. Religious rituals should not be performed externally or verbally. It should be performed in practice.

Cleanliness gives a man mental peace and happiness. Happiness is again a bliss of God. Only the clear hearted persons can enjoy the bliss of God.

God has created such beautiful nature and abundance of beauty is visible. It is we as human beings have played with nature and made the environment unclean, dirty and polluted. To be clean can be interpreted as a person being clean, keeping his vicinity and environment clean and finally a person's soul i.e. inner self clean and free of sins. It is here that God inhabits. This proverb should be followed by each one of us then only we will achieve salvation and happiness in life. We should cleanse our body , mind and soul and of course our environment and vicinity.

Covet all lose all

This proverb is very relevant and says a lot. The word covet means to desire something wrongfully. The proverb simply states that if a person desires to possess more than what he is entitled to, he will lose everything.

It is human tendency to be greedy and his desires are endless. Human beings are never happy and satisfied and he will try to acquire more and more by hook or crook. In this pursuit he may acquire possessions that belong to somebody else which he wrongfully acquires. Wrongfully desiring something is called covet. Even the Bible resents this. Acquiring another's possession forcefully will never remain with him. He will lose all this coveted possessions.

There are enough folktales written time and again by many wise story writers which explain this proverb; the story about the fisherman's greedy wife, the story of the woodcutter. All these stories only go in depth to explain to us that one must not be greedy and go on amassing wealth which one truly does not deserve.

The greedy person will lose everything that he has amassed in this manner. Hence this proverb is a teaching for each one of us. Be happy and contented with what you have and don't be greedy in life. A man will get the pleasure of the possessions he owns rightfully. Moreover he will be a happy and a contented man. It has been proved time and again that a person who is not greedy in life will be contented and a satisfied person and will attain salvation.

Coming events cast their shadows before

The proverb is very self explanatory , however understanding the true meaning and understanding the hidden message is of utmost importance.

Usually any events that are going to occur, the signals of the same in some form or the other is conveyed beforehand. Even nature has its own ways of announcing future events. For e.g. the sky gets darkened with dark clouds, this is a sign that it is going to rain.

Fisherman can sense storms before they strike. Animals often seem to know things that people don't. Wild and domestic animals have a sense and can very well predict well in advance of any expected disaster in nature. There have been reports of animals sensing devastating earthquake and tsunami before they strike.

History and past events have indicated that political instability has resulted in fights and wars and disturbances. An argument may lead to disaster. A person may have to face frequent bad health this may be the indication that he is suffering from some major disease. The appearance of comets were considered to be the indications that some unfortunate event will occur in the near future.

Significant events are often preceded by signs that they are about to happen. In the past, people believed in good and bad happenings which preceded events to come. If you pay attention to these, you can generally tell when something momentous is about to happen. There are usually warnings or signals when an important event approaches in your life.

Hence this proverb is very true. Any indications, we should take it as a warning of the coming disaster or unforeseen event.

Cowards die many time before their deaths

The proverb can be explained that a coward is afraid of anything and everything. However a brave person is not afraid of any dangers and perils. This statement is found in Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar', Caesar stated that cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant would never taste death but once.
The proverb explains the fact that cowards are afraid of death and they experience the pain of death whenever they think of death and whenever they face any danger or crisis in life. Cowards fear for one or the other reason. They dread on seeing some mishap or accident, they even dread to meet a distinguished person.  A coward runs away from any danger. Cowards are so frightened to be in the dark. They dread seeing a fight or murder. They are afraid of some spooky creatures. They are afraid of so many things and instances. Being a coward  is a characteristic found within a person. It is built in a person from childhood.  Such persons normally seek others help to get their work done.

A brave person on the other hand faces any danger without fear and faces it boldly. Fearlessness is a characteristic quality of a great hero. A small story will amplify this point. Captain Nelson, a young lad  was sitting alone one night upon a hill. His mother asked him "have you no fear?" he replied, "Mother, what is fear?" from childhood, he did not know what fear was. The brave are so from childhood.

The proverb thus signifies  that cowards die many times as they are so scared. The brave will face death only once that is the real death.  We should imbibe in young children from childhood to be brave and bold and not be cowards. Such brave persons are valued in society and have high regards and reach great heights and positions in life.

Cut your coat according to your cloth

If you expect a tailor to stitch a suit, however if  the cloth is less, he will never be able to stitch the suit. As this maxim says if the size of the coat is bigger than the piece of cloth and you start cutting without taking its measurement what will be the result? The coat will be unfit or the cloth will be wasted. So it is necessary to cut your coat according to  the cloth in hand. This maxim can be explained that it is very important to make a plan before you put any task into practice.

This is also true with a person's income and expenditure. Any person should not spend more than what he earns. A person who spends more than his income falls into trouble. To cater to his increased expenditure he will definitely take loans, to repay the loans and interest, he again takes loans.  This results in increased loans and debts, and he is  unable to repay his loans and debts, moreover his income has not increased. He has to face several hardships and problems too. The maxim says that we should learn to live within our means and resources. Those who do not have a balance  with these two aspects have miserable lives. There should be a perfect harmony between a person's income and expenditure. Our wise ancestors always preached that spend lesser than what you earn and save for bad days ahead.

But nowadays most people are facing these problem . In this age of competition. Everyone wants to fulfill his desires at any cost to leave others behind in the race of competition. Moreover the various modern facilities  provided by  banks and financial institutions i.e. credit cards, low interest rate loans, attractive loans on consumer  durables. This has added to the rash decisions of the younger generation who never think  of  tomorrow. Everyone knows the truth that if they will spend more than their income they will fall in some or the other peril but they can't resist the desires. It causes troubles and frictions in the family life. This proverb is so apt in today's world and signifies so much.

This also applies to business establishment and organizations whereby they take excess loans and their returns from the business is much low and is insufficient to cover up the costs and expenses. They also face bankruptcy
This proverb is therefore an  advice to all that they should tune themselves with income and resources and think twice before expending much more than their personal capacities and not get lured away by persons around.

This proverb thus has  universal application.

Borrowing dulls the edge of Husbandry

This statement is full of advice. It is used by Shakespeare in his play 'Hamlet'. An aged Courtier named Polonius quoted these words which proved to be very useful to every human being. This proverb though coined so many years ago is still very relevant.
Nowadays life has become very competitive. Everyone wants to be at the top at any cost. Mostly householders do not want to be left behind so they borrow money and buy things so that they look  more prosperous than their neighbors. On the other hand borrowing becomes their habit and it makes them spend thrift. Those who borrow frequently remain borrowers throughout their life. One should try to adjust one's expenditures within one's means and income. Borrower is never welcomed in the society. Nobody cares for such persons. They lose their self-respect and dignity. It spoils the name of persons if he can't pay the debts. That's why it’s unwise to borrow money to maintain a false show. Gray De Maupasant represented the same thing in his story. "The Diamond Necklace" in which he depicts how  a couple sports their whole life paying the debts only for borrowing an artificial necklace due to ignorance.

In the same manner when  underdeveloped countries borrow and take huge loans from other rich nations it makes them worse. They can never stand independently. The habit of borrowing dulls the edges of judicious economy. That's why it is essential to try to live within one's own resources and means.

This proverb boils on the point that a person who borrows frequently to show off , will always remain in debt. Moreover his greed is never fulfilled, he always wants more and more in life. This proverb has more relevance in today's  fast paced economy. On the one hand due to advanced technology there are more and more  products, gadgets, machines which people feel are necessary and are required to maintain their status. On the other hand there are credit cards and ever willing banks to give loans at reasonable interest rates, thus making it more tempting and attractive to borrowers. Gone are the days when persons would save and buy only things they could afford. In this showy world people are less practical and have lost the habit of saving, instead they are spending more than they earn, This proverb is thus an awakening call to the younger generations.  It is highly unwise and stupid to borrow money to lead a life of show and unrealistic pomp.

Borrowed garments never fit well

It is an apt proverb and quite simple to be understood, as a person borrows a shirt so that he may look smart but on the other hand he loses the smartness by wearing a borrowed shirt because it does not fit him well. Everyone has individual differences like shape of body, choice of colour, fitting etc. The people quickly come to know that the garments do not belong the wearer as they do not fit him well.

In the same manner when we use the borrowed ideas in our speech they look odd to others. People know them originally and when they use the views of others their thoughts lose the originality and they sound odd to the listeners. As the borrowed garments do not fit well and they look awkward on the body of wearer. The wearer loses the dignity of his own personality in the same way, borrowed ideas also sport the dignity of the person. One cannot apply others ideas as of his own for long because they remain only for temporary time. He can't use somebody else's thoughts and ideas as one day the reality will be exposed soon.

That's why one should not blindly imitate  others manners and styles of addresses. Everyone has his own background and status. So one should use one's own brain to deal in the society. That's why this proverb is very true for the individuals, societies and nations too. They should not follow others blindly. Nations should also not follow  what other countries are doing, their policies, regimes and issues are different. Each country should follow what best suits them. Each nation has their own customs , traditions, social values which they should follow and abide. They should study the political, historical and economic background of their own otherwise evil will prevail instead of good.

Blood is thicker than water

Considering the viscosity of the two liquids, blood is having more density then water, there is scientific evidence to prove this. Just as the blood is thicker than water. In real life context blood relations are all the persons with whom we have blood relation and water implies all persons with whom we come in contact. It has always been proved that in times of hardship and trouble we look back at our close  relatives who will definitely help us.

Blood is of thicker consistency and suggests commitment. When blood and water are split the former leaves a stain whereas the water will evaporate.

This expressions when interpreted  it means that our blood relations, meaning that family bonds are closer than those of outsiders. The feeling of joy or sorrow and affection towards our blood relatives are greater than those towards others. When in trouble we find that the family bonding goes stronger.

In our life we come across acquaintances, friends, business persons, such people may be temporary in our life. However we keep contact and touch with our close relatives always. In thick and thin i.e. in bad times and good times we definitely fall back on our relatives and blood relations. We may not rely on friends and  acquaintances always.

This axiom was phrased many years ago. Whether it holds true in today's world is questionable. Instances of murdering one's own kin nowadays is very rampant. The simple reason is that money and power occupies a greater and prominent place in everyone's life. To acquire money a person does not shirk to betray his own kin. Hence this proverb may not sound very relevant today. As human values have fizzled away, here not only blood relations but even acquaintances are betrayed. However this is only an exception. We should try to follow the axiom in its truest sense then we will have a better place to live in.

Blessed is the man that endureth temptations

This saying is very true for good  hearted people who are not the slaves of worldly pleasures and desires. Such persons are the  blessed ones and God too loves them. This is a Biblical saying. Temptations are always attractive and they always lead to the destructive path. When a person desires anything, he will do his best to own. To do his best, in the sense that he may use even the meanest way to get that thing. Temptations of the sensual pleasures persuade a person to do something wrong. When a person does a wrong thing he loses the peace of mind. Lord Krishna said in the holy ‘Geeta’ that when a desire is not fulfilled, it causes anger and anger destroys the wisdom of a person.

That's why a person is called a blessed one who does not desire. Who does not desire is always a happy man. Only those persons are unhappy, discontented, sad and morose who always run after the desires, even then they cannot fulfill them.

Yudhishthra in Mahabharat said that, sacrifice all the desires and one would be the richest and the happiest man of the world. That's why a person should resist the temptations because it leads to the path of sin and sufferings. Blessed persons are only those who do not give importance to the earthly pleasures and are not the slaves of these petty desires.

Birds of the same feather flock together

This proverb is  self explanatory. Whenever we see a flock of birds flying in the sky we find that they all belong to the same class. Pigeons, parrots, sparrows, crows, swans and many other fly in their own groups. Animals of the same class also wander in herds or groups. Similarly,  human beings also like the company persons who belong to the same  caste, colour and creed. Birds and animals can live together only in their own groups.
On the other hand human beings have understanding and wisdom so they can choose the company of their own choice. People who have the same sort of character or belief always go together. Usually people make friends with the people of same temperament and aptitudes. They like the company of those who are similar in taste and views and have the common interests. Learned people seek the company of learned thieves seek the company of thieves. Brilliant students like the company of the brilliant students whereas the dullards like dullards. Doctors, lawyers, businessmen and politicians all like the company of their own taste, temperaments and interests.  They all have their unions. Whenever they find any problem they all get assembled at once like the flock of crows and other birds.
This is not only in the case birds, animals and human beings but is true in the case of nations too. Even the nations keep friendly terms with the nations who have the similar ideas and notions.
We commonly notice that persons  who have the same hobbies,  interest, or preference are always found together. They like to participate in the same kind of activities or talk about their common pursuits and you will always see them together. This is what is meant by the proverb ‘ Birds of a feather flock together.

Persons who love to play a certain sport will always be together and will be playing the same sport together. Persons who are avid readers will spend most of the time reading and will have positive vibes with other avid readers. Normally we are not comfortable with some persons, it is because they have different passions and interests in life. We are comfortable and enjoy being in the company of some persons the reason being that we share the same interests and views. A person naturally likes to be in the company of people who have the same interest as they have.

Better pay the cook than the doctor

This maxim is very popular among the persons who care for their health. Any person desirous of keeping fit must follow this maxim. Those who do not know what to cook and how to cook, they spoil their health. Then they visit the doctors with complaints about their ill digestion. Other complications can also be caused by taking ill cooked foods.

This saying has a very important message. A person who lives a healthy life from the early years of life will be less sick and suffer from diseases. Various diseases like heart disease, diabetes, obesity and many types of cancer are due to unhealthy diet.

Everyone knows that health is wealth. One should do one's best to maintain good health. The literal meaning of this proverb is that we should not mind paying a cook who will cook for us healthy food, rather than falling ill because of consuming unhealthy food and spending for medical bills. There is a sarcastic view in this proverb which states that cooks are cheap to employ, but a Doctor's bill is a burden on our pockets. One should pay the cook who is noble enough to prepare nutritious dishes for you. If you take nutritious foods, you will never fall ill. If you never fall ill, you will never have to visit the doctors. To avoid doctors one should have nutritious diet and it can be provided only by the good cooks. That's why better pay the cook than the doctor. Only the cook knows what is better for one's health, in our daily life we see many people hesitate to spend money on milk, fruits and other nutritious foods but they do not hesitate to pay the doctors the amount they ask for. That's why this proverb is very valuable and it reminds that if one wants to keep oneself healthy, wealthy and wise one should spend on nutritious food instead of paying the doctors when one gets ill by having ill foods. So one should always take care of one's health.

Though the phrase directly emphasis on the health of a person, there is a hidden message, which implies that for any opportunity that comes by we should capture the same at the right time, later on there is no point in crying over the lost opportunity. Later on regretting on the lost opportunity is of no use. This proverb also advises us that it is better to be cautious from the beginning instead of repenting later in life.

Better late than never

This a very popular proverb. The meaning is very easily implied in the proverb itself. This proverb tells us that it is better to do something that is profitable, right or good a little late in life rather than not doing it at all. A person fails in accomplishing some task , he may regret and feel sorry , but he should never lose hope, whenever another chance is confronted he should take advantage of the opportunity and accomplish the task, though it may be late in life.

It is wrong notion that people feel that only the youth can learn and do something. This is wrong, opportunities keep coming, it is only our keenness to tap the opportunity. One should never feel that one is old and cannot do something at this age or one does not have the capability to do something. If a person is willing and has the intuition, then he may surpass youngsters and may excel. There are many arts and skills like dancing, painting, art, music, reading, writing, playing musical instruments, sports for which there is no age for a person to learn. It may so happen that a person was too busy in his job or work that he never found any time to pursue some skill or art. Whenever in life when he gets the time and opportunity he should pursue the same and not think , that he is old or it is not the right age. A person should never waste his precious time and regret in life. A classic example is Adult education. We come across many people who in later life's pursued various degrees and qualifications. They have also excelled. A person having urge and keen desire , age will never block his ambition.

It is always better to change your career at any point in life, rather than just continuing with something you loathe. The founder of The Walt Disney Company started in life as a newspaper editor, he was fired from his job because he lacked imagination and did not have good ideas. Julia Child worked as a CIA intelligence officer, she later on realized her culinary skills and quit job. It was at the age of 36 that she switched career and is now a famed chef.

This proverb is therefore so relevant and speaks so much.

Be it ever so humble there is no place like home

On this earth there is no place like our own home. Home is the only place where one can get true happiness of mind and soul. There one finds oneself free from the worries of the world. However humble one's home may be but it is like a heaven for him on the earth.
Even the birds have great attachment  with their homes. In the morning the birds fly away to unknown directions but they return to their shelters in the evening wherever they may be. The same is the case of our pet animals. Cats and dogs feel secure only in his master's home. Even if they go out for a stroll, they finally come back to their master's home. They feel safe and secure and loved and very much at home. The same applies to human beings. Sometimes we may  visit some of our rich relatives and friends. There we enjoy the comforts and pleasures of the most superior class but suddenly we get bored and we become home-sick. We may spend time in luxurious Hotels, at the end of the day  we start feeling homesick. Students or persons due to work may have to live far away from home. After few days they feel homesick and desire to visit their home. Then nothing can soothe our minds. We take a sigh of relief after we reach our own home however small and humble may it be.

In the same manner one's country is also like a sweet home for one. One develops a sort of love and attachment with one's native country to which one can call it one's own. Whenever one goes abroad to the most famous countries of the world but after sometime one comes back to one's own nest that is one's own country. It's a natural instinct that everyone develops a love and attachment to the place of his birth, that's why we call our home not only home but a sweet home.

Barking dogs seldom bite

It is a very common saying that the dogs who bark loudly do not bite. These dogs bark but they do not harm others. They bark from a distance and use all their energy only in barking. These types of dogs lack courage so they can't attack either man or any other animal. Similarly sometimes the clouds thunder and become dark giving the impression that it is going to rain heavily, however it may not rain.

Dogs by their very nature bark loudly. Especially when they see unknown persons or strangers they bark loudly and nonstop. It is their way to tell their master that some unknown person has come. This is the very reason dogs are kept as watchdogs or guards in most houses. Such dogs only bark loudly and constantly they only frighten the strangers and they do not bite. However some dogs do not bark and are very timid and meek, however such dogs may actually be ferocious and may bite.

This proverb can be aptly compared to human nature. We come across persons who keep on boasting and talking, though their words may not make any sense, but they have great pride in blabbering. Their talks may be 90% lies and fake talk. Some persons talk a lot and threaten and remark obnoxious things, however such persons are harmless and are actually afraid of doing anything. On the other hand meek and simple people may be dangerous and treacherous persons. They don't speak much hence we can never judge such persons.

Nowadays this saying is very true about the leaders of our nations. They shout and make tall promises very loudly from the platform before the innocent public. They promise that they will do many things and later on they forget everything. Poor people only wait for the time to come when their promises will be fulfilled. But the time never comes and they become disappointed. They have come to know that the people who talk much can do nothing in practical. People having key positions and leaders talk great things only when their selfish motives have to be fulfilled as in the period of elections when they have to get the votes from the innocent people. But now people have become wise enough and they do not believe on such people who talk much and do nothing. As the dogs of good breed seldom bark but can attack others skillfully. In the same way the people who talk less and boast less can do noble great deeds.

As you sow so shall you reap

This proverb has its origination from the Bible. It is very simple to understand and the proverb itself is self explanatory. The proverb means that whatever your deeds, good or bad, you will be repaid accordingly. One will either enjoy or suffer the consequences of his earlier actions .

A person who does good deeds will always find happiness and will be rewarded accordingly. The proverb suggests that we are responsible for the consequences of our actions . If we are good in our deeds we will be rewarded accordingly. However if we commit sins and do wrong actions and do not behave properly we will have to bear the sufferings and pangs of misery for our bad deeds.

The proverb suggests that we ourselves are solely responsible for our deeds good and bad. Correlating this proverb to our everyday life we can say that a student who studies sincerely throughout the year will definitely bear the fruits of success, he will come out with flying colours and also be able to make a good career in his life. Similarly a businessman who toils day in and day out will find success in his ventures and will progress in life and will climb the ladders of success. A farmer who puts healthy seeds will see a bumber harvest.

On the other hand a student who spends majority of his time wandering and whiling away time unproductively and never studying will accordingly never succeed in life. A business man who expects windfall gains without toiling and struggling will never find success. A farmer who sows diseased and not good quality seeds will never get good harvest and crops.

Madam Curie is known today because of the effort she and her husband put in. We remember Florence Nightingale because of the love, affection and care with which she nursed the wounded soldiers.

This proverb is thus apt and means and signifies a lot. One must remember this proverb and follow all actions accordingly. If one wants success and happiness in life then one must accordingly put in effort and do good deeds.

Art lies in concealing art

This line is very beautiful and it conceals a mystic meaning in itself. It is said very artistically that art conceals art i.e., depiction of an art needs a special art to depict it. It means an artist should have artistic talent  to show realistic art.

When a person does something skillfully and efficiently, this technique is known as an art. Art is abstract. Art of an artist lies in creating his art in a real sense. A real art makes the viewers think that what they are watching is all genuine and true. When a person tells a lie in such a style that nobody can disbelieve him is known as an art.

As an actor acts a role of another character it cannot be appreciated until he does not play the  role of a villain if he is able to create hatred for the character he played, he thinks himself as a successful actor, that's why it is said that art conceals art.

Sculptors who are good at their work create masterpieces and makes spectators wonder  whether they are real  or they are mere idols. It is the skill of the sculptor that he has recreated something alive into a non living masterpiece. Similarly some paintings may just be a small frame, but they speak for themselves. A well painted portrait may tell a whole story. A movie which has been created  well may bring tears in the eyes of the viewer. This is the power of art. The artist's genius lies in making the spectator feel that what he is watching is real. The skill of an artist whether in painting, in acting or in literature lies in creating a world of reality.

Leonardo do Vinci and Andrea Del Sarlo, Ravi Verma and M F Hussain have created immortal works of art. The painting of Mona Lisa is the  best example of art because her smile in the painting is so life like that nobody can disbelieve in and watch it great admiration for the artist.

Art is long, life is transitory

The literal meaning of this proverb is that; Art is vast and human life is short. This is quite true as the whole life of a person is short enough to learn any art to its perfection. It is foolish, if a person thinks that he can master various arts in his life time. As art is eternal, it requires skill and practice. An honest artist only can make his art immortal if he is perfect. None can be perfect as it is said that perfection thy name is God.

The most essential aspect in this world is acquiring knowledge. Most people acquire partial knowledge but pretend as if they are very learned and knowledgeable. They pretend to know everything after knowing a little bit. These pretensions cause a lot of trouble not only to the person but also to people surrounding them. A classic example is illustrated in Mahabharata where Arjun’s son Abimanyu enters the Chakravyu without knowing how to come out of it and this led to his death.

The great celebrities of the world, who reached the peak of glory were never satisfied. They felt that till then they were not perfect. They said that they could not understand the infinite nature of art fully. Newton, a great scientist, who made many discoveries, said in the end that he was only a child gathering pebbles on the shining sands of the vast ocean of knowledge.

It is very strange that there is a certainty of the life of creation but there is no certainty of the life of its creator. The life of human being is transitory and fleeting. But his art keeps him alive for centuries to come. However, the work of art is not sufficient there are numerous beautiful expressions that make it eternal and everlasting. True and honest artists never think that they are perfect. Throughout their life they try their best to attain perfection, even then they say that life is short and art is long. They say that hundreds of years are less to attain perfection as the sphere of art is very long and vast.

We should strive with our best efforts to deepen our knowledge in the area of our interest. With very little and shallow knowledge, our journey will never be complete. We will be caught in the problems of mediocrity. This proverb has always been relevant and will always be a guiding proverb for generations to come.

Are we happier than our forefathers?

The modern world is wonderful, it is full of comforts and luxuries which were unknown to our forefather? They used to travel in bullocks carts and reached their destination in days.

Now it is a matter of few minutes or hours. There were no rails, no taxis, no airplanes then. Now the world is changed. Are we not happier than our forefather who had not known any of these? Yes it is a happier and lovelier world than that of Adam and Eve.

Not many people believe that our forefathers lived in perfect bliss. Their wants were few and were easily satisfied. They were very religious and worshipped God and were God fearing. There was a close relationship between man and man.

Man has now conquered the forces of nature. He can race with the clouds and in the air. With twinkling of an eye he can reach any part of the world. He has made many weapons to defend himself. He has fought diseases and increased life span. Yet, he does not feel safe and happy. He is under constant fear of being attacked and killed. There was no fear of nuclear war in the past. After effects of war are terrible to imagine. Are we happier than our forefathers? Certainly, not.

Our forefathers did not have comfort and luxuries of life. However they toiled and struggled for a living had a good and cherishing social life. They lived a simple life, they lived a contented and were happy. We on the other hand are afraid of our own creations, hacking of the net by unscrupulous persons, our money to be stolen from persons hacking our account online. Nuclear war, fear of terrorists, kidnappings, drugs, hijacking of air planes, murders have increased in recent years this can be attached to the advancement in technology. Material developments and medical science has taken a stride forward, however these have been misused by unscrupulous persons and have robbed us of our spiritual and moral progress.

To reach a conclusion we must define happiness. If happiness means better comforts and luxuries and easy going life without struggle, then we are the happier lot. But if I define happiness as inner peace, relaxed life, joy, life without stress, then our forefathers were lucky.

What is happiness. Is possessing unlimited wealth happiness? Is eating the most delicious food every day happiness? It is not so. Had it been so. Ford and Nizam of Hyderabad might have been the happiest men of their times. But they were not.

In the modern age man is surrounded by unrest, fear, hatred and jealousy. Man does not trust man. Can we than say that we are happier than our forefathers? The answer is no; We can't say with certainly whether our world is happier than that of our forefathers.

Appearances are often deceptive

This is a popular proverb that warns us that we should not believe in things and persons merely by their appearances for they are often deceptive. We are living in an age of pomp and show. Everybody is fascinated by the outer appearances. That is why people are running after the glittering outwardly world. Nobody cares to know what actually is behind the curtains. Cunning people take advantage of such people.

Advertizing companies make very interesting and attractive advertisements. Producers of the products do not care for the quality of the products they only care for the quality of the wrapper. Showy and attractive wrappers fascinate the public but when they use it they regret. In the same manner outer beauty and beautiful dresses also attract the shallow people, sometimes people are deceived by them.

When we meet someone for the first time, we make a judgment based on his external appearance. Our judgment may be wrong. It is just like a wrapper on a chocolate or a gift wrapped, unless and until you don't remove the wrapper you cannot guess what is in the package. After consuming or using the product only you can judge whether you have got true value for the product.

Hence this proverb is a warning and guides us that we should never arrive at any conclusion about a person in the first meeting. A few encounters will enable us to understand the person. It's better to stay neutral until the moment when you can say for sure that you know this or that person very well to say he is a person who deserves or doesn't deserve faith, understanding or attention.

So, never judge people by appearances, because appearances are deceptive!

Any time means no time

This proverb is very relevant and signifies that there is a right time to anything and everything. If you fail to plan and decide about the event , it will never take place.

It is a normal human tendency for a person to postpone activities for a later date mostly due to laziness, such postponement will result in loss of precious time and the work may never get done anytime. A farmer is lazy to go out and plough his field, he keeps postponing this results in the fact that he is unable to sow the seeds at the right time which results in him unable to grow crops. Similarly farmer should harvest his crops at the right time, if he neglects, the birds will eat the crops or the rains may destroy them.

Students also should make it a habit to study regularly. Time lost is never got back. Time is priceless, once lost you can never get it back.

In an organization also the right decision at the right time is of utmost importance. A person may lose a lot of funds and resources due to wrong timing.

Persons who value time and do everything at the right time will always succeed and achieve his dreams. A successful person is one who has always valued time and never been lazy in postponing critical aspects.

This proverb is very important in today's world. Prompt action at the right time will benefit any person. Therefore we must make use of the precious time and not be lazy.

An idle brain is a devil's workshop

The literal meaning of this proverb is that any person who has nothing to do will be tempted to do many unproductive and mischievous acts. Man's brain is computerized workshop. The wonderful inventions which we are enjoying today are all invented by the brains of men. Man can create anything constructive as well as destructive.

When a person is busy with some business and has some meaningful aims he does not get time to think of doing something which proves to be harmful for others. The persons who have nothing to do and whose minds are idle can think of rubbish ideas. They implement those rubbish ideas into practice which may cause destruction and chaos in the society. A person's mind devoid of noble ideas is known as a devil's workshop where destructive ideas will take place. Keeping the brain idle is very dangerous for the person and society too.

Nowadays advancement in technology has in a sense become a boon and bane. Life has become very simple and easy, everything is possible on the click of a button. Unlike our ancestors who had to struggle for their daily bread and butter. Moreover life was full of hardships and there was lot of activities to be done on a daily and regular basis. Youngsters today do not have to struggle or do any meager tasks. Machines , equipments and gadgets do all the required work. The youth therefore have ample idle time, it is this that provokes them to do unproductive tasks and activities. The advent of the Internet and electronic communication has given a further impetus to these youngsters.

Nowadays the youngsters of our country are going astray because they have nothing constructive to do. Schools and college are only producing clerks or jobless youths. Government . is also not capable of giving jobs to every youth. Parents too do not pay attention to the careers of their children. Every youth has tremendous energy to do something creative and challenging. This is not possible if he does not get the right directions. They also become militants which is the most dangerous enemy of man. Hence each and every person should be provided with the right opportunities to grow and develop. The frustrated people who have higher ideals can't achieve them and they become the devils of the society and harm it. They always try to take revenge upon others. That's why it is true that an idle brain is a devil's workshop.

This proverb though coined years ago is more relevant today. It is very important to keep our minds constructively occupied so that it will become a God’s workshop and not a devil's workshop.

An honest man is the noblest work of God

A man who is always sincere and never deceives others is known as an honest man. He can never do wrong even in adversity. An honest person keeps unity amongst thought, word and action. It is said that God always reflects Himself through the hearts of honest persons .

Honesty and sincerity are a sort of inward qualities which are naturally found in a man. They give rare value to his personality. A man of ugly appearance can be the most handsome one by being honest and sincere in his nature. Gaudy clothes, ornaments and good looks do not make a person attractive. By the grace of God personality lies in good and honest nature of a person. These type of genuine people are always avoided and badly treated in their life time.

This proverb is so very true in today's world. We come across persons who give importance to their outward appearance, they show themselves outwardly as being good personalities and generous persons. However on proper examination we learn that in reality he is only pretending to be good and kind hearted. Diamonds and glass look almost similar. However diamonds are harder than glass and are very precious. A diamond must be checked thoroughly its internal characteristics will reveal its true properties and characteristics.

Socrates who was the best creation of God was sentenced to death as he taught the people to be true, noble, honest and sincere. Mahatma Gandhi also met the same fate as he was attaining freedom honestly by using the weapon of Ahimsa i.e. non violence. Jesus Christ was crucified. Even then nobody could erase their names and still their noble thoughts are followed by millions of people all over the world. Man of noble and honest character are very rarely found on earth that's why they are known as the noblest work of God.

Nowadays we rarely find honest and genuine persons. Hence this proverb reflects on this aspect that external appearances may be deceiving, we should examine the inner personality and internal character and only then decide. Such genuine persons are very rarely found, even in adversities they do not get wavered and prove their genuineness.

An apple a day keeps the Doctor away

Eating an apple every day will keep you in good health, which means the doctor at bay. Why is it that apple is so special compared to other fruits banana, orange, mango etc. The reason is that apple has many properties which no other fruits have. Other fruits have benefits but only specific. Apple is the only fruit which has so many properties all packed in one fruit. Hence since ancient times Apple has occupied such a special preference.

The properties that an apple has been proved on several instances. An apple has excellent qualities if stored in a cool, dry place. Nutritionally the apple contains no harmful sodium or fat to make a doctor frown. On the contrary it provides vitamins, fiber and boron, an ingredient which aids the body's absorption of calcium, so promoting strong teeth and bones and guarding against osteoporosis. It has also been found that persons who ate apples regularly had improved lung function and did not suffer from lung diseases.

Apples contain vitamins, antioxidants, fiber and minerals. Apple also contains vitamin C, which is essential to boost the immune system. It also contains a plant chemical which helps the body to treat wounds, and to maintain the muscles. An apple also has antioxidant  properties, which help to prevent free radicals from building up in the body which may destroy healthy cells , this may lead to various chronic disease including cancer.

Apples have long been associated with a healthful diet. The fruit is low in calories and sodium, and high in fiber and Vitamin C. Apples are one of the healthiest foods available and their regular consumption is linked to a reduced risk of a variety of illnesses.

It seems that our ancestors were wise indeed, consuming an apple every day can do us nothing but good, unlike other things which we may eat . Many parents use this idiom to get their children to eat apple so that they get healthier. However, eating an apple only is not sufficient. A person should also eat other food and have a balanced diet to keep diseases away and remain healthy. Though this proverb has a lot of relevance, it is not sufficient.

All that glitters is not gold

The literal meaning of this proverb is that not everything that is shiny and superficially attractive is valuable. A piece of metal may be coated with gold, it may glitter but that does not mean that it is gold and it is highly valuable. Mere external look and appearance is not a sure sign of excellence. In short appearances are deceptive. Anything and everything that looks attractive and tempting from outside may not be actually so. On the other hand something unattractive and not tempting may actually be very valuable.

In everyday life we come across persons who are very showy, they dress in the costliest clothes and jewels, move around in highly prized vehicles and show off in each and every way possible. They behave as if they are very good people . However in fact they may not be so.

While judging people we should not do so by their looks. Mahatma Gandhi wore simple clothes, but he is still held in great reverence throughout the world. Abraham Lincoln was not endowed with good looks. But he is considered as the greatest American President. Mother Teresa had a very simple appearance. But people all over the world remember and respect her. So it is only fair to say that all that glitters is not gold.

A movie or show with high publicity, best cast may actually have baseless content. On the other hand a movie or show with lesser publicity may actually be highly entertaining and worth watching. We must not jump to conclusions about the merits or demerits of anything merely on the basis of the way it is packaged. In this age of advertisement, products are packaged very attractively to lure customers. The product may not be worth the attractive package.

We should be able to safeguard ourselves against deception . We should be able to judge by experience and reality. While judging we should be guided more by our minds than by our eyes. We should carefully understand the nature of men and not judge them by their outward appearances.
Appearances are often deceptive. External appearance may be very attractive. But a proper examination will reveal the truth. Every shinning metal is not gold.

This proverb thus teaches us that it is human tendency to form a opinion based on external appearance. This is very wrong. Take your time and examine the ins and outs thoroughly, only thereafter we should make Very often, things are not what they seem to be. We often form our opinion bout objects on the basic of superficial impression. One should only then form an opinion.

All roads lead to Rome

In ancient period Rome was considered to be the most famous city of the world. It was also known in the centre of the world. The great English poet, Chaucer of l4th century wrote that all the different paths lead to Rome. This proverb can be traced to the period after the Greek civilization when Rome was founded as a city. The city slowly established itself as one of the leading military powers in that region, slowly an empire appeared which was called as the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire was the centre of all the civilization in that period. Gradually it conquered a lot of countries in that region and at the height of its empire the Roman Empire spread from Germany in the east up to Spain and encompassed even a part of United Kingdom. Most of the administrative decisions for this big kingdom originated from Rome and it became the centre of the ancient world. Moreover the Roman civilization had a very good network of roads to travel to the various provinces and most of them were connected to Rome which was the centre of the Roman Empire.

This proverb means that all the different paths lead to the great city of Rome.

Each and every human beings rich or poor one day has to embrace death. It is the only goal of their life. In spite of this known fact human beings are greedy, selfish, unhappy , not contented in life. Each person tries to prove he is far more superior. He walks with a mask on his face.

As we see all the rivers of the world, flow through different directions and in the end they lose their identity and fall into the deep blue ocean and become one single ocean. In the same manner people throughout the world are different in color, languages and professions but their aim of earthly existence is the same. Their joys and sorrows are the same.

We give emphasis to religion and communalism which is the root cause of worries and miseries and war. We all separately insist to attain our own rites and rituals. Sometimes it causes many differences and conflicts among the people, They make it a communal issue and create chaos in the society. They forget at the moment that God is only one and the aim of all the religions is also one that means the realization of God. God who is the origin of whole of the universe and everything living or nonliving has to emerge into one as is said all the roads lead to Rome.

In short this proverb instills in us the human values of being good hearted, generous and live as peace loving persons respecting all humans as they are. After all the end for each one of us is the same.

Actions speak louder than words

This proverb merely consists of 5 words but means a lot . The literal meaning emphasizes that; what people do reveals more about them, than what they say. This is an age old proverb and has a hidden meaning inside. Human nature is such that, people have the habit of boasting that they are going to do such and such thing which are highly exaggerated. People build castles in the air and like to boast without actually doing so. An individual should realize the fact that if his achievements are noteworthy, people will definitely come to know about the same, he need not boast about it. Great achievers and great persons are known by their actions and not by their words.

It is easy to speak and blabber , but how many of us act accordingly. Politicians make tall promises before elections, however they rarely act according to the talks. They conveniently forget the tall promises that they made. Their actions rarely are at par with their words. Words sound good but they should be accompanied with actions. It is our actions that prove that our intentions are genuine.

In earlier times a person's word was a matter of honor, even till his death. It was a matter of pride to keep up to one's promises which would reflect his genuineness. This can be proved by our great leaders and history is ample proof for such facts.

However, nowadays people make all kinds of big promises which they have little intention of keeping. People like to say nice thing to give a good impression of themselves, however they do not even feel ashamed of not abiding by their words. Such persons are common these days as they do not fear anyone. Unlike our forefathers who feared God and were afraid of being punished for wrong doings.

We can never trust a person who says one thing and does something totally different. On the other hand a person whose actions corresponds to what he preaches is highly respected.

A hidden meaning in this proverb is that if you want to achieve something, work hard towards your goal, your achievement and actions will go a long way in giving you success, name and fame. It is better to take a step ahead and work hard in achieving your dream rather than feeling proud about it.

This proverb is therefore very relevant and we must try to follow this proverb in true earnest. We too should develop the habit of matching our actions with words at all times.

the pride and respect that you will earn when this fact actually comes true. The day you come 1stin class, it will be known by one and all sooner or later.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder

The literal meaning of this phrase is that the lack of something increases the desire for it. We cannot always live close to our loved ones. For various reasons i.e. job, study or any other reason we may be living in some other distant place away from our loved ones. It is the separation that makes us realize the values and ideologies of our loved ones, each moment we realize their absence and our inner mind and conscious keeps reminding us ' I wish he or she was by my side'. Such complexities normally arise when we have to take a decision and we are confused, we very well know that had our loved one been by our side we would never have fallen in such a dilemma.

The time period we are away from our loved ones, we focus on the good virtues connected to that person and we ignore their faults and shortcomings. As a result our love and affection grows, leading to a stronger feeling for that individual than when he was nearby.

There are numerous instances which have proved this axiom. This is mostly associated with love or family relations. An instance will further explain this axiom , two friends are separated for a long period of time, in the absence of either they realize what friendship meant and how much they miss each other. Similarly a family away on vacation may realize that they miss their pets more than they expected. The same also applies to family members. In all these instances , when the parties reunite they express the same with embraces and kisses and a joyous event is witnessed.

It has been proved by many researches that couples in long-distance relationships have a stronger bonding in various ways than those who live closer together. Distance creates longing and yearning within the human heart.

There are however exceptions to this proverb. Especially when a person is away from his loved ones, and in his new surrounding he comes across persons who are more influential and have occupied a prominent place in that person's life, then his yearning for lost relation is not of relevance. However, such exceptional cases are very rare.

However, this proverb has been around for many years and remains a very true statement.
